Neti is the practice of flushing the nasal passages in order to clear out the accumulated dust, dirt, pollen, mucous, and environmental particulates. Simply put, doing neti makes it easier for us to breathe. This allows us to take in better quality air, and it helps our lungs to be more effective.

Neti has been a part of daily wellness practices (Dinacharya) in India for thousands of years and has been re-discovered in the West.

Neti is said to effective at alleviating sinus and allergy problems, the congestion of colds and hay fevers, and post-nasal drip. Regular use of neti reduces inflammation of the nasal passages. Practicing neti ensures the free flow of air through both nostrils.

When doing neti, it is recommended to make a saline solution. Here is what I personally use in my practice at home:


  • 1 c. warm filtered water
  • ½ tsp. salt
  • ¼ tsp. baking soda
  • pinch of turmeric powder*


  1. Place all of the ingredients in your neti pot and combine well.
  2. Pass all of the neti solution through one nostril, letting it run out through the other nostril.
  3. Repeat on the other side.

*Note: the turmeric acts as an astringent agent, pulling excess moisture out of your nasal tissues. This will deliver longer-lasting relief from congestion issues such as happens with springtime allergies.
